Bethany Sutherland is the daughter of Brenna MacKay and Brock Sutherland. Bethany resents Brenna because she left her behind to stay with Brock. Brock was a loving father to Bethany, but Bethany felt that her mother could never love her. Bethany wondered what was wrong with her for a long time before she realized that Brenna was the one with the problem. Bethany loves Juliana as her mother and calls her mother. She never speaks with Brenna and does her best to avoid her.
Bethany became a police officer when she got out of college. She wanted to try to do the right thing. She loved being a police officer until she discovered corruption within the department. She knew that if she turned those officers in and testified against him, her career in law enforcement would be over because no other police officer would ever want to work with her again. She decided that she had to be honest with herself and she turned them in. She testified against those officers and quit the force. She became a private investigator and is a popular P.I. in San Antonio.
